What’s Happening in Durango This August? A Local’s Guide to Summer Events

August in Durango is one of my favorite times of year. The days are still long, the mountains are green, and the whole town seems to come alive with energy and events. Growing up here, some of these summer traditions were the highlight of the season for me—and they still are.
Whether you're visiting, thinking about moving here, or already lucky enough to call Durango home, here's a peek at some of the events happening around town this August. These are the ones locals really look forward to.
🎡 La Plata County Fair
📍 La Plata County Fairgrounds
📅 August 6–10, 2025
This is a true hometown tradition. The fair has everything from 4-H animals and rodeos to funnel cakes, carnival rides, and good old-fashioned contests like pie baking and photography. I have so many memories of walking through the barns, cheering at the demolition derby, and seeing friends all over the fairgrounds. It’s a great way to feel connected to the community—and it's just plain fun.
Local tip: Go early in the day if you want to see the animals before the crowds roll in, and don’t leave without trying the kettle corn.
🚂 Durango Blues Train
📅 August 21–23, 2025
📍 On the historic Durango & Silverton Railroad
This one is a real standout—live blues bands boarding a vintage train, winding through the San Juan Mountains. Music, movement, and mountain air. It’s such a uniquely Durango way to cap off summer.
Local Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light sweater. The open-air cars get breezy once the sun sets, and dancing on a moving train is part of the fun!
🍻 San Juan Brewfest
📅 August 22 & 23, 2025
📍 Buckley Park, downtown
Late‑month kicks off with one of Durango’s most lively events. More than 35 breweries, live tunes, food trucks, and a festive crowd—usually early fall energy disguised as summer. It’s one of my favorite nights out.
Local Tip: Buy tickets early—they sell out fast. I recommend the VIP entry if you want shorter lines and extra tasting time!
🍑 Saturday Farmers Market
📍 TBK Bank Parking Lot (Downtown)
📅 Every Saturday, 8 AM–12 PM
While this isn’t a “one-time” event, it’s absolutely worth mentioning. Our farmers market is one of the best ways to start your weekend. You’ll find fresh produce, handmade goods, local musicians, and friendly faces. And August means peaches, tomatoes, and so many good things.
Local tip: Grab a coffee, pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers, and make a morning of it. This is Durango at its most relaxed and connected.
Final Thoughts from a Local
These are just a few of the things happening in town this August, but they really capture the spirit of summer in Durango. They’re not just events—they’re how we celebrate community, connection, and the beauty of where we live.
If you’re exploring Durango as a place to live, there’s no better way to get to know it than by showing up to one of these. You’ll see just how welcoming and special this town is.
